No. 6 Station Cottages, or Caob Rock as we know
it, is an unusual house to have as a holiday cottage, situated as it is
in the high moorland
village
of Princetown.
The house and seven others were built in about
1880 to house the employees of Princetown Station and the railway. The
station buildings and the railway lines have long since gone, but the
track itself to Yelverton remains, having become one of
Dartmoor’s
favourite
walking and cycle paths.
Within
a few minutes of leaving the front door our visitors find themselves on
the high moor with its sweeping views to
Plymouth
and Cornwall and the wild moor land
vistas of Dartmoor.
Again within a few minutes walking, in the opposite
direction, our visitors find themselves in the centre of the little town
of
Princetown. There is a Post
Office and village stores, the choice of 3 cafes, and 2 very popular
public houses, serving not only Princetown’s own beers but delicious
food as well.
The High
Moorland Visitor Centre (http://www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk)
and the recently opened Duchy Square Centre for Creativity, (
http://www.duchysquare.org)
with its craft studios and gift shop. Princetown even has its own
charity shop, run by the community for the community.
And then there is,
of course, the prison. No visit to Dartmoor and Princetown is complete without viewing the
granite fortress that is HMP Dartmoor and visiting its museum. (http://www.dartmoor-prison.co.uk).
You could even buy your Dartmoor Gnome there, made by the inmates, as
your ultimate souvenir !
